"We the undersigned petition the engineering faculty to provide a water cooler in the up or downstairs foyer of Queens building for the free use of students and staff.
A wide body of evidence has linked drinking adequate amounts of water to significant educational advantages, increasing concentration whilst helping reduce tiredness and the long and short term health problems associated with dehydration. Presumably recognising these benefits, the faculty has installed a mains water cooler in Merchant Venturers Building which is well used and greatly appreciated by students, yet in Queens Building people are required to buy bottled water from a vending machine at a cost of £1.10 which when spent on a regular basis can be off putting to many. The use of disposable bottles is also both wasteful and damaging to the environment.
Water coolers, once installed, are relatively inexpensive to run and maintain. It is understood that the primary reason for the cost of installation being high is that water outlets would need to be tested for safety, but we believe this is a cost the faculty should bear in order to provide a better working and learning environment, as well as offering potential future advantages to the faculty from better understanding its own plumbing system.
This issue was raised by students at least in April of 2001, possibly earlier, and we believe the time has come for the faculty to act."
